Vintage Victorian Era Rainy Day Rubber Boots Ad

Free Vintage Spring Pictures and Clip Art

Welcome to Day 3 of 25 Days of Vintage Spring Pictures and Clip Art!

Here’s yet another Victorian trade card image from the late 1800′s – though this one is a little different than the usual, ornate artwork that is usually quite feminine. This trade card advertised Storm King Rubber Boots made by the Boston Rubber Shoe Co. There’s some pretty cool history here that is still relevant today… The Boston Rubber Shoe Co. was founded in 1853 by Elisha S. Converse. Yes, as in Converse shoes. Technically, the actual Converse shoe company was founded by Elisha’s fourth cousin Marquis Mills Converse later in 1908. But it’s interesting to know that shoes have been running in the Converse family since the mid 1800′s!

Regardless, I love this vintage advertising artwork for so many reasons – it’s beautifully illustrated, targeted to men (most trade cards were made to appeal to women), and it fits into a lovely spring theme of ‘April Showers Bring May Flowers.”
