Vintage Poppy Black and White Clip Art
Alas, my very last poppy flower bloomed this morning. That means no more poppies for another year. This is one of my favorite illustrations from my vintage Burpee seed catalog, as it really is one of the prettiest flower illustrations in the entire book.
Speaking of poppies, I came across this insanely beautiful and bizarre set of vintage ceramic pharmacy canisters when I was at the Randolph Street Market earlier this year. They caught my eye because they were large and beautifully colored. Then I literally gasped in surprise to see the “Opium” and “Morphine” lettering. I know back then these items were quite commonly used pain killers/sleep aids, but in a modern context it’s just weird. Had these canisters been labeled as “Crack” and “Crystal Meth” I would have reacted pretty much the exact same way.
