Vintage Munich 1972 Olympics Postage Stamps from Equatorial Guinea
As promised earlier this week, here is the second set of Olympics stamp art sets. These three stamps come from the tiny country of Equatorial Guinea which is right on the equator in the middle of Africa. This set comes from the infamous Olympics in which 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were assassinated in the Munich Massacre. What makes these stamps even more curious, is that Equatorial Guinea didn’t even compete in 72 Olympics – so I suppose these commemorative postage stamps were created to celebrate the games from afar… ? It wasn’t until 12 years later in 1984 that they went to the Olympics – and since then have only found notoriety in a handful of competitors who have had some of the slowest event times in history. Ouch!
