Welcome to Day 2 of 25 Days of Vintage Hallowe’en Art!

So today’s addition to my Halloween series is a little different than the images I normally post. For this series, I have created six pumpkin carving stencils based on some old vintage Halloween clip art and images. Converting anything into a carving stencil is a tedious and precise process that involves a lot of simplifying of the artwork, while also having to ensure that all of the pieces carved out of the pumpkin still keep the pumpkin flesh intact. I see a LOT of pumpkin patterns on the web that are impossible to carve, because many of the pieces that are critical to the design are actually detached from the pumpkin. Unless you have magic gravity pumpkins in your garden, the carving clearly has to stay in one piece for it to work.

This particular pumpkin face is based on one from The Graphics Fairy – a truly unique and somewhat bizarre moon face from a French antique postcard. And it is literally one of my favorite images she’s ever posted!

It makes me think of the moon with the bullet in it’s eye from the old Georges Méliès silent movie that was central to the story in the modern movie Hugo:

If by any chance you use this template for your pumpkin this year, I’d LOVE to see it and post a picture of it! So please send pics if you can!

EDITED TO ADD: I carved this guy in a small pumpkin from my garden this last weekend – he turned out awesome! The teeth are a little difficult to carve, especially if you don’t have a super-tiny knife. But it still looks great, and a little creepier than I anticipated! :)
