This French postage stamp is showing off one of Edgar Degas’ incredible ballerina paintings. This particular painting is called “Dancer with Bouquet 1877”. From what it says about Degas on Wikipedia, he seems to be the perfect example of the crazy, isolated artist stereotype. Renoir said once, “What a creature he was, that Degas! All his friends had to leave him; I was one of the last to go, but even I couldn’t stay till the end.” I guess Degas liked to argue with people and was pretty much an avowed racist. I hate hearing stuff like this about artists I love – Degas’ work is absolutely exquisite. Why does he have to go and mess up my idealized notions of him? 😉 Ultimately, he never married and spent the last years of his life, nearly blind, restlessly wandering the streets of Paris before dying in September 1917. Not a very happy ending.
