Vintage Coca-Cola Ad from the Summer of 1917

Vintage Patriotic and Summer Art Images, Clip Art, and Printables

Welcome to Day 5 of 25 Days of Vintage Summer and Patriotic Art!

This vintage Coca Cola ad to me is the epitome of the 1910′s. The dresses are so-very typical of the time, and the dog is a Russian Wolfhound, also known as a Borzoi. Borzoi dogs were very frequently depicted in art from that time period. They are so large and totally elegant looking, it’s not surprising that artists liked to use them in their works!

This particular Coke ad appeared in a July 1917 issue of McCall’s magazine. I find it interesting that the ad specifically says, “Demand the genuine [Coca-Cola] by full name – nicknames encourage substitution.” I’m wondering if the “Coke” nickname was already emerging, or if they were really already having a hard time protecting their trademark? I guess in 1917, Coca-Cola had already been around for 31 years – that’s definitely long enough to attract a few imitators! ;)
