Vintage 1912 Color Book Plate of 18 American Flags

Vintage Patriotic and Summer Art Images, Clip Art, and Printables

Welcome to Day 8 of 25 Days of Vintage Summer and Patriotic Art!

Here’s another wonderful illustration from my 1912 set of children’s encyclopedias. This is a full color book plate featuring 18 flags from various United States entities, including the postal service, U.S. military flags, and even a ‘lighthouse service’ flag (?!?!). My personal favorites are #13 and #14 – the long, skinny flags called the “Navy Pennant” and the “Revenue Pennant” – whatever the heck that is. ;) Notice that there are only 46 stars on the American flag – Arizona and New Mexico didn’t become states until after this set was published, even though it was the same year. Another interesting thing: I noticed that there was no entry in the encyclopedia for “Titanic”. Evidently the books went to press before April of that year, too!
