The late 1800′s was an amazing era for book publishing. Many of the books from that era are filled with incredible engravings, ink drawings, and wonderful color plates. I’ve seen some of these books sell for well over $1,000 on Ebay. This vintage seashell illustration comes from The Water World written in 1884 by Prof. J. W. Van Dervoort. The title page states the book is “Profusely Illustrated”, which usually means that’s the code word for “You-Will-Not-Be-Able-To-Resist-Buying-Me-Even-If-You-Try-To–So-You-Might-As-Well-Give-In-Now”. Actually, I was very lucky to be able to get this book for less than $50 – beautiful public domain books can quickly get spendy.
