Welcome to Day 12 of 25 Days of Vintage Hallowe’en Art!

Yesterday I mentioned that the stencil I had posted originated as paper decorations put out by the Dennison company. Between the late 1910’s and 1920’s they released an annual autumn “Bogie Book” full of Halloween party ideas, recipes, costume ideas, etc. These magazines today can go for a pretty penny – usually I see the bidding on Ebay go up to $50-$75 dollars. But for rarer years and during the Halloween season, expect to pay around $100 for each issue. My Halloween collector’s guide has them priced up to $250, but I don’t see them sell at that price in this economy.

That’s probably only a price a hardcore Halloween collector would pay. And I luuuurrrrvv collecting vintage Halloween stuff! I unfortunately haven’t had any luck yet getting my hands specifically on a Bogie Book. But I do have three magazines put out by the same company and around the same time – two general party idea magazines and a book about making crepe paper costumes. These still have a lot of Halloween items, but aren’t quite as collectable as the true Bogie books.

This illustration comes from one of their party magazines – these were crepe paper costumes you could make from Dennison’s printed Halloween crepe paper. Their ‘how to’ instructions are sorely lacking, unfortunately. Since most women sewed their own clothes back then, they assumed a level of garment construction knowledge that most people don’t have these days. Even I – who I consider an intermediate-advanced level seamstress – have a hard time figuring out what they mean.

But even if we can’t recreate these gorgeous Halloween costumes, we can at least enjoy the illustrations!
